Tweet The history of the ZL1 Back in 1969, 69 Camaros were produced under a special code name called the ZL-1. At the heart of the ZL-1’s DNA were drag racing aspirations. Designed by a Dick Harrell and targeting the NHRA super stock class the Camaro was fitted with a 7.0 litre all aluminum engine pushing out 376 horsepower instead of the then standard 255hp V8. Adding 47% more power to the package while stripping down weight through the use of an all aluminum engine block is exactly the recipe required for a higher power to weight ratio and great drag speeds. In road racing trim, the factory ZL-1s were able to clear the quarter mile in 12.1 seconds @ 116mph. Replacing the restrictive exhaust manifolds on the engine with tubular headers was rumored to bring power production closer to 550hp and running the car with aftermarket headers dumped after the collector with 9” slicks was proven to deliver a 10.9 second quarter mile @ a stunning 132mph for a car that was basically stock. Recently, chevrolet has announced the new ZL-1 line for 2012 and I was so impressed with the technical prowess of this car that I had [...]

Tweet Not dissing anyone here, in fact the contrary. In this short post we’re going to look at the implementation of direct injection technology on two ends of the performance spectrum. I’ve been on the record saying that I am a huge fan of direct injection technology (though it has existed in diesel applications for ages) as it transitions to the gasoline and performance arena because it raises the potential volumetric efficiency of the same sized engine by as much as 15% according to Audi’s documentation. Direct injection technology injects fuel (diesel, gasoline, E85…etc) directly into the combustion chamber after the intake valve closes during the compression stroke (rather than during the induction stroke). This allows for a few things to happen: Your intake manifold is 100% dry at all times and things like manifold backfires are less likely. Less hassle and cleaning to do with fuel and deposit accumulation inside the intake manifold, EGR, the backside of the intake valve, the throttle body …etc In traditional injection setups, anything you inject into the intake air stream (such as fuel, water injection, methanol cooling, or even nitrous oxide, or exhaust gas through your EGR) displaces part of your intake volume [...]

Tweet Recently it was announced that the new 2011 Mustang GT would return to the 5.0 (302cid) V8 formula for power delivery. I don’t get what the big deal is going from the current 4.6 liter to a slightly larger 5.0 liter. I don’t even get what the massive nostalgia is towards the old 5.0 that came in the fox body. Going back to the late 1980s, the old mustang 5.0 liter engine used all of it’s massive 4.9 liters of displacement to deliver a whopping 165horsepower. The heavy cast iron block, coupled with cast iron heads meant that the power train on the car was not only quite heavy but also not very power friendly as cast iron heads severely limit the amount of boost and timing you can put into a motor before the cylinder head starts to become a limitation on cylinder cooling and extracting enough heat transfer out of the combustion chamber to maintain safe power operation. Sure the 5.0 was later updated to make 205 hp with different heads, a newer cam, and newly experimented fuel injection rather than the old 2 barrel carburetor but still… what is the big deal? Even more interesting is looking [...]

Tweet Here are three really cool videos of ride alongs with some amazing factory supercharged cars. Usually these types of ‘street cars’ cannot be unleshed on the street as most of these cars can break every available speed limit in 2nd gear. The only way to see these cars truly live up to their potential is on the track… with no further adue: Ford Mustang Shelby GT-500 www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZaGOxCG7VVk Cadillac CTS-V www.youtube.com/watch?v=jFRXGZuiZgo chevrolet Corvette ZR-1 www.youtube.com/watch?v=ObFBtVbe-ug The Data Car Engine Supercharger Power Power Band Weight Lap time Shelby GT-500 5.4 V8 Twin-Screw ~13.5psi 540hp @ 6200 rpms 2200 rpms 3920 lbs 104.3 seconds Cadillac CTS-V 6.2 V8 eaton TVS , 2.3 Liter , 10.5 psi 556hp @ 6100 rpms 2300 rpms 4200 lbs 103.9 seconds Corvette ZR-1 6.2 V8 Eaton TVS , 1.9 Liter , 9 psi 638hp @ 6500 rpms 2600 rpms 3350 lbs 95.8 seconds Obviously the car with the highest power to weight ratio and the widest powerband will be the most usable on the track, and the corvette shows this with mastery. What is really interesting here is the CTS-V. Having a lower power to weight ratio than the GT500 and a very similar powerband, this car [...]

Tweet From a technical point of view, throttle response can be measured by has your engine can build vacuum in its intake manifold i.e. via throttle pressure. The faster and higher peak vacuum is reached in the intake manifold, the higher the pressure differential will be between outside air, and your engine. This pressure differencial forces the air to flow from the area of high pressure (outside air) to the area of low pressure (the engine and cylinders), and the higher the pressure difference, the greater the pressure force, and the faster the air flow into the engine. This is essencially how throttle response works. To improve throttle response several engine alterations can be used to achieve a higher peak vacuum in the engine or a faster change in vacuum per throttle input… some of these include: 1- Using undersized intake pipes and intake plenum runners to increase the airflow velocity in the intake system, making the engine able to suck all the air out of it faster and create vacuum sooner. 2- Adjusting intake cam timing to open the intake valve as peak vacuum is created inside the cylinder near bottom dead center. 3- Reducing the overall intake system [...]

Tweet In 1986, Toyota released a supercharger car based on the stellar 4age motor found in the corolla. The MR2 with its mid engine rear wheel drive platform was a great everyman’s supercar and was powered by the 4agze supercharged motor… Now, everybody’s heard of unicorns, these mythical creatures that somewhat similar to horses, but possess more beauty and more power with their visually distinctive uni-horn. However, nobody’s ever seen a unicorn. Some of us may even begin to doubt that this mysterious creature every existed. The same goes for the 7AGZE engine. Almost everyone I know who’s interested in Toyota has either heard of it, thought of it (and thought it was original), or thought of actually trying it? But to date, very few people have seen it. The 7agze is a hybrid engine of: 4age: a 1.6 liter rev happy engine first introduced in rear wheel drive corollas. Coupled with a 5 speed manual , a Front/Rear drivetrain configuration, and a very light chassis (no airbags, no crumple zones, no sound deadening, no seat massagers, no nonsense) made for a fun commuter car that later became a drifter’s modern classic. 7afe: a 1.8 litre stroker version of the [...]

Tweet I am inspired by GM-Australia. They have taken the Vauxhaull (Pontiac GTO) family car and turned into a car for the automotive enthusiast family. The latest edition of the Vauxhall is dubbed the Vauxhall VXR8 Bathurst S, and packs alot of bite. The Vauxhall VXR8 Bathurst S starts off with a factory 6.2 liter V8 producing 431 hp and builds on that with the addition of an eaton M122 supercharger. The charger forces 8 pounds of boost into the massive V8 giving out over 560 hp in its most basic form and 527 ft-lbs of torque! The engine modifications on this car include: A large capacity intercooler High-flow fuel injectors A separate cold air intake Walkinshaw-developed ECU map Also availabe as an option is a bi-model exhaust system worth another 10hp at the current boost and power level. The exhaust can be switched by the user between a tame ‘street’ performance and sound level, and a more aggressive ‘optimum‘ setting. Considering the tame nature of the LS3′s idle and the very modest boost level. A camshaft swap, an increase in boost could produce more power on this engine, however, it is very unfortunate that the Eaton M122 [...]
