Tweet I’ve recently updated the power calculator to include a turbo calculator. This calculator, performs similar calculations to the supercharger calculator in terms of flow and boost requirements to reach your power goals. It then goes out and chooses 10 compatible turbochargers that match your target application. I’ve also added the calculations for the minimum size for a single or dual wastegate to properly regulate boost on this application. After completing this update I sat and thought: “You know what, it wouldn’t take much more work to turn this into a twincharger calculator !” and that’s what I ended up doing. The video below talks about my preferred twincharged setup which is a sequencial arrangement with a higher rated turbocharger feeding compressed air to a smaller , lower rated supercharger, feeding twicely compressed air into the engine. In the video we cover the following topics: Preferred twincharged arrangement Air metering and the blow through system Using bypass valves to improve response Alternative arrangement for superchargers that are part of the intake manifold (and therefore can’t have an intercooler placed after them). A hands on example using the power calculator to twincharger the Toyota 5sfe engine to 320 horsepower (which is [...]

Tweet How do you go about modifying a car that is truly a benchmark in its own class ? www.youtube.com/watch?v=biWqO25x-ZA [embedded video, to see this video read this article on our main page] The M3 has always been the top of the line street performer. With cheetah like reflexes, jaguar like top speed, and the growl of a lion, the M3 leaves nothing to be desired in the world of daily driven sports cars. So how does one go about improving something that is truly best in class (5 seconds faster per lap in this video!), and something that is without a doubt the best that the OEM *and BMW is not any plain old OEM* had delivered? Most enthusiasts would quiver at the idea of modifying a German car, let alone the M3. However, Sammy, the owner of the car in question here went ahead with a surgical strike buildup. In trying to improve an already stout performer, the approach always has to be two fold: In order to outdo the best of what OEM has to offer, you have to go after the absolute BEST in class of what the RACE WORLD has to offer! Less is [...]

Tweet From a technical point of view, throttle response can be measured by has your engine can build vacuum in its intake manifold i.e. via throttle pressure. The faster and higher peak vacuum is reached in the intake manifold, the higher the pressure differential will be between outside air, and your engine. This pressure differencial forces the air to flow from the area of high pressure (outside air) to the area of low pressure (the engine and cylinders), and the higher the pressure difference, the greater the pressure force, and the faster the air flow into the engine. This is essencially how throttle response works. To improve throttle response several engine alterations can be used to achieve a higher peak vacuum in the engine or a faster change in vacuum per throttle input… some of these include: 1- Using undersized intake pipes and intake plenum runners to increase the airflow velocity in the intake system, making the engine able to suck all the air out of it faster and create vacuum sooner. 2- Adjusting intake cam timing to open the intake valve as peak vacuum is created inside the cylinder near bottom dead center. 3- Reducing the overall intake system [...]

Tweet Here is a beautiful example of a Hemi Supercharger setup in a 1972 Plymouth Cuda. The car is featured on mopar muscle magazine and is a gutted and tubbed ‘street’ car powered by a 6.1 liter Hemi engine. The nicest touch on the car is the use of a water to air intercooler to cool the inlet charge, which gives a shorter route between the supercharger and the engine. This aplifies throttle response because the air has less distance to travel between mashing the big pedal and reaching the combustion chamber. The setup: Chrysler 6.1 liter Hemi Paxton supercharger @ 10psi of boost. Custom air to water intercooler setup. AEM engine management system with dual fuel maps (for pump gas and racing fuel). TTI Long tube headers 3″ Dual exhaust The 518 RWHP was produced with premium unleaded.
Tweet Building on the beautiful high revving v8 powerplant, MTM motorsports upgrades the performance, looks, styling, and handling of the 4.2 Audi RS4. The heart of the upgrade package is a Lysholm twin screw compressor elevating intake pressures to a modest 6 psi. This fairly low boost pressure means that the engine’s static compression ration can be left untouched and that the supercharger package can be a true ‘bolt on’ affair. Following through with this ‘bolt on’ strategy, MTM have coupled the supercharger with an integrated top mount intake manifold with integrated air to water intercooler courtesy of Laminova intercoolers. Also in the mix is an MTM bolt-on cat-back exhaust system exiting in an exotic dual dual (that’s four outlets) 3″ tips. The car is further enhanced with suspension modifications, lowering, lightweight body parts rounding off the performance package. The result of all of this work is shifting power up from 420 hp @ 7800 rpms to 540 hp @ 8220 rpms. Torque is amplified from an original 317 ft lb , 430 Nm @ 6000 rpm to a new 412 ft lbs, 560 Nm @ 3700 rpms. The attention to sound engineering design in this kit (using a twin screw supercharger, [...]

Tweet The LS1 powered Camaro Z28 is a great car, with plenty of power and great modification potential. One of the typical upgrade paths for Z28 owners is high flow heads, high lift moderate duration cams, and healthy doses of nitrous oxide. In unleashing this nitrous driven frenzy on the LS1 engine, the LS1 has proven to be a fairly robust contender in the face of a 200 horsepower shot of nitrous unleashed on the motor at 2500 RPMs, some people have even gone as far as spraying 300 shots on their stock LS1 with great success. One of the great things about nitrous is it gives us some insight on the power of our engine. Since nitrous is typically delivered all at once in a single shot, then it usually produces huge torque figures at lower rpm ranges, and as the RPM’s rise, the torque increase from the nitrous shot drops down, as horsepower stays maintained. The reason for this is the basic relationship between torque and horsepower. Horsepower (hp) = Torque (ft.lbs) * RPM / 5252 By applying this math we find that a 200 horsepower shot sprayed at 2500 RPMs add about 420 ft.lbs of torque to [...]

Tweet What modifications do I need when adding a supercharger to a truck? What modifications do you need when adding a supercharger to any car for that matter? When adding a supercharger to your car there isn’t that much that changes with the basics of how the car works. The main difference between a supercharged car and a normal car is the elevated power output, which comes from literally cramming more air into the engine than what it would have breathing on its own under atmospheric pressure. There are a lot of myths out there about needing to upgrade EVERYTHING when supercharging or turbo charging or even using nitrous injection on a car. That’s simply not true, this is not a fire sale J. What is true are four things: 1- Head Gasket Supercharging, turbo charging, nitrous injecting, or even increasing the compression ratio on the motor ultimately increases peak cylinder pressures inside the cylinder. By having more air and fuel in the cylinder we have more effective compression pressure inside the cylinder (whether this pressure is from a higher compression ratio, a hotter mixture, a compressed mixture, or a combination of these factors). The typical [...]

Tweet If you’re a car geek like myself, then some cars (although modestly powered) will still interest you because of the sheer amount of theory and technology jammed into them. One such car is the mid 90s to early 20s Mazda 929S (AKA the millennia, the Sentia). The car is powered by a small but very efficient Miller Cycle 2.3 liter 60* V6. The engine utilizes the miller combustion cycle in which the horsepower losses associated with the first half of the compression stroke (when the piston is much closer to bottom dead center), by keeping the intake valve open. Obviously on a typical 4 stroke motor the open valve would allow the air from the previous stroke (the intake stroke) to escape causing a loss in power, but in the miller cycle the air stays trapped in the cylinder and is rather compressed to 2.0 atmospheres due to a roots type supercharger boosting the engine to 14.0 psi. Once the piston rises up in the cylinder bore to a more efficient location, the valve is closed and the piston completes the compression stroke on its own. The short duration of the compression stroke means that the use of high [...]
