Tweet Supercharger boost pressure controls how much additional horsepower your engine will make from using the supercharger. One of the simplest modifications that can increase supercharger performance is increasing the supercharger drive ratio to allow the supercharger to spin faster and move more air, thus creating more boost pressure. First an overview of the supercharger drive ratio. In a typically supercharger installation, the supercharger is driven by the engine’s serpentine pulley and belt system. Because the supercharger is connected to the crankshaft on the same belt, there is an obvious drive ratio between the supercharger and the engine based on the respective pulley sizes. For example, if the crank pulley is 4″ in diameter, then for every rotation of the motor the belt moves 2*pi*r which is about ~25 inches. If the supercharger had a snout pulley that were 2″ in diameter, and there was NO BELT SLIP, then 25 inches of belt rotation will cause the supercharger to spin by 25/(2*pi*r) = 2 complete rotations. To simplify things, the supercharger drive ratio is exactly the ration between the diameter of the crank pulley to the supercharger pulley or in our example 4:2 which is 2:1. It becomes [...]

Tweet This is a great article by muscle mustangs and fast fords. A lot of turbocharger and supercharger enthusiasts think that a certain supercharger or turbocharger will produce X hp per psi and that the only way to get more power per psi is to change up to a more efficient supercharger or turbocharger. This article here takes three related engines, a 4.6 3 OHV VVT mustang engine, a 4.6 4 OHV engine, and a 5.4L 4 OHV engine and subjects all three to 20 psi of boost from the same blower. As we would expect: engine efficiency, head design, and displacement all have a final result on final power and torque figures showing that psi is truly nothing but a measure of engine restriction relative to supercharger flow capacity. As long as the supercharger can support more flow for the same PSI on its compressor map, and so long as the supercharger has not yet been geared to its maximum rpm you can always produce more horsepower at the same PSI level by improving the motor’s flow and making it breathe more (with heads, cams, displacement, variable valve timing, compression ratio and more). Once you’ve increased the engine’s flow [...]

Tweet Engine Performance Parts to improve supercharger performance… I am compiling a guide on information on how to pick the exact engine performance parts to fit your target power requirements. Basically I want to eliminate all the guess work out of tuning and save you some money from having to do things over and over again. While I was doing research for ‘buying the right intercooler’ I got lost, honestly. There are two types of information you will find out there: 1- One class of articles is written by engineers talking about pressure differentials, thermal efficiencies, enthalpy and multi variable equations that are very remotely related to flow, horsepower, torque, supercharger rpm or other things that we KNOW that we can use as an input to our equations. (Basically this science needs to be translated to layman’s terms) 2- The other class is a group of random trial and error advice by enthusiasts, press releases and other materials that you find online. Here’s what we do know: First let’s talk about how intercoolers work. There is some debate about whether the intercooler is like a heat sink whose function is to absorb thermal energy from the incoming air to [...]

Tweet Our last articles about combining supercharger performance with turbocharger top end seems to have found some online appreciation. So, I’ve decided to write up a step by step on how to do the math for twin-charging your own car. I’m going to start with a typical compact car engine, such as the Toyota Celica 2.2 liter 5sfe engine. The engine makes 135 hp at 5200 RPMs with a 6200 RPM redline. For starters, every horsepower requires about 1.5 CFM of air (depending on the air density). So 135 naturally aspirated hp requires a flow of 202 CFM at pressure ratio of 1. The pressure ratio is the ratio of turbocharger or supercharger boost pressure divided by atmospheric pressure. Each 1 atmosphere is equal to 14.7psi of pressure… thus: PR = (14.7 + Boost pressure)/14.7 So for a normally aspirated car: PR = (14.7 + 0) / 14.7 = 1. Supercharger calculations: Using 14psi as our target boost (and the maximum safe boost we’d want to extract out of a roots style supercharger) we get the following pressure ratio: PR = (14.7+14)/14.7 = 1.95 New expected horsepower level: old HP * pressure ratio New HP = 135 * 1.95 [...]

Tweet This is the triple distilled guide on engine performance parts to help you make the most power with the least effort. There’s an abundance of bolt on and custom application engine performance parts available for any vehicle, and the internet is full of advice, trials, and feedback from enthusiasts, brand promoters, magazine editors, and even racers about which performance parts are best for your car. Engine performance hinges on one of THREE general factors: 1- raw power factors 2- efficiency factors 3- Power boosters 3- Power Boosters: Typically called forced induction, power boosters include serious modifications to your engine that can result in a 30 to 400% power increase while maintaining the same raw power and efficiency figures (i.e. at the same peak rpm and with the same displacement). Because of this serious increase in power, power boosters are the great equalizer that allows smaller engines to simulate and exceed the performance of a much larger engine. Originally these technologies were developed for conditions where more power was needed with a limitation on the physical dimensions of the engine. A prime example for this would be requiring more horsepower for a plane that would see most of its usage in high altitude thin air. [...]

Tweet Carbontech Redback Spyder – Engine Performance Parts Anyone who’s seen the movie MAD MAX is familiar with Mel Gibson’s ford XB Falcon, with the modified Concord front end and the infamous Blower protruding through the hood. In the movie, Max goes on a vengeful rampage where he is the judge, the jury and the executioner…. I don’t think the movie leaves any doubts as to how passionate Australians are about their cars and it comes as no surprise that an Australian entrepreneur would spend four years of his full time designing, prototyping, retrofitting, and building Australia’s first supercar – suitably labeled the Redback Spyder. The redback Spyder is based on a solid foundation of a chevrolet LS1 V8 mated to a Getrag 6 speed transmission. The car’s performance is further enhanced by a handful of carefully selected engine performance parts: · Le Mans Style ground effects front end to increase linear flow and direct air towards the intake system. · A carbon fiber intake system ducted to the car’s roof scoop to reach the cool high pressure air stream passing over the car at speed. · An eaton M90 twin-scroll supercharger · Custom 4-1 headers and true [...]
